Overprint on stamps of for Arequipaco, Peru, Cuzco provisionals, 1881-85. District Overprints: during the classical period, stamps were sent from the main post office in Mexico City without district overprints. These stamps were not valid for postage. This was done to prevent the theft of stamps as they were shipped to the outlying districts. Once received in the districts, they were overprinted with the name of the district and thus validated into postage stamps, into as many as sixty districts.
